Moutti tou Stavrou- Livadi trail: A challenging but stunning hike

by Savvas Michail

Description

Deep in the Paphos Forest, a trail unravels like no other. For hikers seeking serenity, isolation, and the chance to be fully immersed in the heart of the woods, this is the place for you. It is a path where the pine trees seem to step aside, creating a natural corridor in the most breathtaking way possible. The Moutti tou Stavrou – Livadi nature trail is located near Stavros tis Psokas. The majority of the trail is shaded by a dense pine forest, making it truly a sight for sore eyes.

The trail is a linear 11.5 km route ending at the Livadi picnic area. Completing it one way is challenging due to the remote location and the lack of easy transport between the endpoints. Consequently, a roundtrip covers 23 km, which is demanding when factoring in the 1,145 meter elevation gain and loss. The trail is classified as difficult and is recommended only for experienced hikers. The total hiking time is approximately 7 hours, including only brief breaks.

Viewpoints

The trail stretches deep into the heart of the island, offering a sequence of dramatic vistas that keep every hiker on the edge of discovery. Above all, the true masterpiece is the Paphos Forest itself. Due to its remarkably secluded location, visitors can wander in peace, far from the typical tourist crowds. Beneath the canopy of tall pine trees, hikers can witness the wild beauty of a landscape that feels significantly more dense and untamed than any other in Cyprus. It is a place of unravelled beauty, where the ancient rhythms of nature remain perfectly preserved.

While the majority of the trek is sheltered beneath a canopy of tall pine trees, the trail frequently breaks into open “windows” that gaze out toward the horizon. These clearings reveal the wild beauty of the surrounding mountain ranges, offering a dramatic vantage point where the secluded Akamas Peninsula and the shimmering waters of Morphou Bay emerge from the distance. It is in these moments of unravelled beauty that the vast scale of the Cypriot landscape truly comes into focus.

A few kilometers away from the trailhead, the path ascends toward a mountain peak crowned by a solitary fire lookout station. Scaling this height offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama, revealing the unraveled beauty of the entire forest from a single vantage point. While the temptation to linger in this secluded spot is strong, hikers must carefully monitor their pace and remaining daylight to ensure they can navigate back to the trailhead through the tall pine trees before dusk settles over the wild beauty of the landscape.

The journey concludes at the Livadi picnic area, a sanctuary of unravelled beauty where the trek’s intensity gives way to serenity. Tucked away under the cooling shade of tall pine trees, this secluded haven features a gentle, running stream that creates a rhythmic soundtrack to the forest. It is the perfect place to rest and soak in the wild beauty of Cyprus, offering a truly magical end to the adventure. If you somehow manage to have a car at this end, then you have finished the trail and you can enjoy the place with ease of mind. However, if you have to return back be ready to hike 1.145 meters elevation gain stretched in 11.5 km.

Additional things that you could do in the nearby area:

Personal comments

Views: This trail has several viewpoints and provides unmatched beauty compared to other trails.

Location: The trail is located in the heart of Paphos forest, nearby the Stavros tis Psokas location. Its remote location might be a deterrent for most hikers, but its beauty will definitely reward you.

Safety: Due to its remote location the trail is rarely walked by people. Even though I saw people at the trailhead (driving) and at Livadi picnic area, the path is long with several sections having no signal. Additionally, it is advised to do the hike with a company (never alone).

Difficulty: The trail is very difficult and recommended only to experienced hikers with similar trails (above 1k elevation gain/loss).

Is it worth it? Without a second thought, YES! The trail is truly magical, a slice of paradise that feels entirely untouched by human hands. The sense of absolute isolation combined with the raw, primal beauty of the landscape offers a rare experience that is hard to find elsewhere. If you are looking for a trek that makes you feel at one with nature, this hike will be etched in your memory forever.
